Simple Things

The best things in life are simple - like a dry day with mild temperatures and the time to hang out in the 'baby' pasture and watch the babies play. They are getting larger now; you seldom see them nurse much now. The moms are starting to distance themselves a little bit from their kids. And there is a new toy in the pasture - a chunk of Douglas fir log on its side. Lan and Toby amuse themselves for minutes attempting to knock each other off the log.

Even the moms get in on the action (they like to scratch on the log). Life is very good.

Small Wonders

Why does it surprise me each time I see a small baby goat chew their cud? It fascinates me to watch those little jaws - no more than an inch wide - move sideways over and over, chewing the roughage they have consumed. The babies do a creditable imitation of the far-away look their mamas get when they are chewing their cud.

I guess I assume that since they are still babies and still nursing that they would not have graduated to cud chewing. However, life is a serious business to these little ones and learning how to eat appropriately can mean the difference (in the wild) between life and death. So they learn early.

But it still fascinates me :)

Beginnings

It's late spring and there are four new baby goats in the pasture. This is s beginning of life for them. So it seems a good time to make a beginning myself and start a blog. People tell me this is easy to do. So far, I have wasted nearly two hours trying to figure out how to start a blog. I would rather waste that time watching the baby goats leap and play and race and knock each other off the wooden spools in their pasture. So, I am headed outside to do just that.
