Colene

I was in the barn tonight after feeding the goats, playing with them. Contessa was in her favorite spot on the bench leaning against me while I gave her pets and scratches. Her mom, Colene, is my shyest goat. It is very rare that Colene will allow me to touch her. It usually occurs only when Contessa is between us and I quietly, slowly, gently, slide my hand off of Contessa and onto Colene and give her a pat and scratch or two.

So imagine my surprise tonight. As I scratched Contessa under her chin, Colene walked right up to me, slid her fuzzy, soft muzzle into my hair and sniffed at my ear. It tickled, but I tried hard not to move and startle her. She slid her muzzle further under my hair until her whole face was buried in my curls. She then snuffled around a bit, withdrew, nuzzled my nose and chin and gave me a quick lick on the nose! I was so surprised. And very pleased that she offered that contact on her own.... whatever her reasons were.

Life gives us wonderful gifts from time to time....................this one has left my hair smelling like a goat LOL

Thank you Colene.

It's nearing spring..... honestly, it is :) This normally is the time of year that I start preparing kidding pens, cleaning them top to bottom, bedding them with fresh, sweet smelling, bright straw, hanging freshly cleaned water buckets and mineral holders and new hay bags. All in readiness for heavily pregnant does who will soon give birth.

But not this year. There are no pregnant does waddling around my pasture and barn this year, dropping heavily to the ground to lie and chew their cud while they dream of little kids to come. No sleepless nights and days of 'kid watch' to look forward to for me.

I know it's for a good reason. My husband, very reasonably, would like to do something else this spring. Perhaps go on a short trip. So he politely asked me if I'd give up kidding for one year. I agreed as he is worth that and much more, and he asks little of me.

But oh - I will miss the kids ...............
